Thank you ahead of time to the members and directors of the Detroit Regional Relocation Council for considering a gift to the Capuchin Soup Kitchen.

Since 1929, the Capuchin Soup Kitchen has offered hospitality, compassion and a warm meal to those suffering through challenging circumstances. As the Capuchin friars and their partners in ministry work to attend simply and directly to spiritual and other basic needs, we offer our gratitude for joining us in this work by making a gift.

The Capuchin Soup Kitchen does this work through seven programs at five locations:

  • Meal program sites at our Meldrum Kitchen and Conner Kitchen
  • Capuchin Services Center food pantry and clothing distribution program
  • Jefferson House CARF-accredited residential substance use disorder treatment program for men
  • On the Rise Bakery and Cafe providing work experience and job training to men recovering from addiction or returning from incarceration
  • Rosa Parks Youth Program providing after-school tutoring and art classes for Detroit youth
  • Earthworks Urban Farm, a 1.5-acre USDA-certified urban agriculture program providing education and training opportunities, while supplying fresh produce to our meal sites

Capuchin Soup Kitchen

Capuchin Soup Kitchen - Detroit, Michigan

Many people have been asking how they might help us help others at the Capuchin Soup Kitchen, as we are serving people who have recently lost their jobs, in addition to those we normally serve. For everyone's safety, we've canceled all of our in-person fundraisers, including our largest fundraiser of the year, the annual SOCK Dinner held at TCF Center in September. We ask you to be safe, and to consider others with love and kindness during this difficult time.

Now through June 1, 2020, The Bollinger Foundation will match every donation made to the Capuchin Soup Kitchen, dollar-for-dollar, up to $20,000! Help the Capuchin Soup Kitchen provide meals, social work services and kindness to metro Detroit residents during these difficult times.

Capuchin Soup Kitchen - Detroit, Michigan

Dear Capuchin Soup Kitchen Supporter,

Although I’m not a parent, I have loads of respect for those who raise, teach, and coach young people in our society.

Helping mentor and support kids who are at risk is just another aspect the ministries of the Capuchin Soup Kitchen in which you so generously share. As you well know, we’re much more than just “soup.”

Hope is also on the menu here. I’d like to introduce you to a very special woman who has been serving up “hope” to neighborhood kids for nearly twenty years now.

Summer Peace Camp Video

Support the Rosa Parks Children's Program

Sister Nancyann Turner is member of the Dominican Sisters of Adrian, Michigan. Dominicans are considered “cousins” to the Capuchin Franciscans because Saint Dominic and Saint Francis founded their communities about the same time in the thirteenth century to walk with and serve people facing poverty and difficult circumstances.

Sister Nancyann became a part of the Capuchin Soup Kitchen staff in 1999 with a burning desire to walk with people who were struggling and to be the change she wanted to see in the city. She came with many years of teaching experience and as a certified art therapist.

She proposed that we open our Capuchin Soup Kitchen Conner site doors to neighborhood boys and girls. She envisioned a safe gathering place where they could play, learn and be nurtured without fear of the city violence and poverty that surrounded them.

This was the was the start of the Rosa Parks Children’s Program. A space was prepared, volunteers came forward, but no kids.

That’s when Sister Nancyann showed her fighting spirit and holy determination. She began walking the east-side neighborhood near the soup kitchen. She knocked on doors, and met young, single mothers and older struggling grandmothers raising little ones on next to no money.

Sister Nancyann asked the key question, “What do your kids need?”

And from their heartfelt responses, she began to build The Rosa Parks Children’s program. A children’s library began to be formed. Programs for tutoring and art therapy were set up.

Art Therapy programs were developed to help children and youth deal with emotional problems and build self-esteem. All the programs help the children expand their creativity. Our tutoring activities support the kids’ academic progress, and the conflict resolution training encourages the kids to deal with adversity in creative and peaceful ways.

Here every child knows they are loved, accepted and brimming with potential for success. Here every child is safe, respected and cherished.

Will you please support the Capuchin Soup Kitchen, and especially these children who share in our Rosa Parks Children’s Program?

Sister Nancyann has great plans for them this summer, including a three week “Peace Camp”, a young leadership camp and many fun and educational field trips.

The children’s Peace Garden continues throughout the summer. These city kids love playing gardener and even farmer, helping to sow seeds and nurture them to full growth and maturity.

Their garden is a wonderful metaphor for Rosa Parks Children’s Program, I think. All of us can help nurture children, especially those who have been planted in difficult situations through no fault of their own.

It takes a loving community to protect, nurture and raise up healthy, kind and giving children, especially kids being raised in poverty and sometimes in fear. This ministry is a great sign of hope for the future of our community. I can see that in the smiling faces of dozens of children welcomed here day after day by Sister Nancyann and her team.

Will you join Sister Nancyann, the rest of our dedicated staff and volunteers, and give generously to help support our kids?

Together, through our ministries like The Rosa Parks Children’s Program, we are feeding young bodies, nourishing souls, and strengthening communities in the heart of this great city.

For the many kids, along with their parents, who participate in our Rosa Parks Children’s program, this can give them the tools to reach their potential and support their dreams.

I’m so happy to introduce you to Sr. Nancyann and the great program she helped begin and has sustained for nearly twenty years.

I’m deeply grateful for your time and may God’s peace and blessings be with you,

Br. Jerry Johnson, OFM Cap. Director

Each and every gift, no matter the size, will support the kids with their dreams and goals! Thank you for your kindness!

Capuchin Soup Kitchen

Capuchin Soup Kitchen - Detroit, Michigan

In 2022, the Capuchin Soup Kitchen provided over 150,000 meals at our Conner and Meldrum soup kitchens. We thank all of you for your dedicated support of our ministry. Learn about different ways to support us.

Meldrum Kitchen

We served 52,000 meals last year at this location. Approximately 200 meals a day are served at the Meldrum Kitchen. Our Meldrum guests are typically male, experiencing homelessness or in unstable housing, often diagnosed with a mental illness and/or substance abuse addiction.

We provided an opportunity for individuals to receive a shower at this location. Our facility provides showers and a change of clothing each day to give those in need a fresh focus and an increased sense of dignity and self-worth.

Conner Kitchen

We served 98,000 meals last year at this location. Approximately 320 meals a day are served at the Conner Kitchen to working families and seniors. As many as one-third of its meals are served to children 12 and under.

Service Center

We provided 1,252,121 pounds of food last year to our Detroit neighbors. The food pantry serves about 240 people per day, many of which represent households, which amounts to about 5,000 pounds of food every day. The Service Center features a 'shoppers' choice' food pantry to resemble a small grocery store, complete with reach-in freezers and coolers, vegetable and fruit islands, bread and pastry racks.

Recovery

We host what is officially known as a 12 step study each morning at alternating kitchen sites. We invite anyone who is interested in support & friendship.  One need not be alcoholic or substance abusing to attend as it is an “Open Meeting.”   Conner Kitchen on Monday & Wednesday mornings 9:30 – 10:30; Meldrum Kitchen on Tuesday & Friday 9:30 – 10:30.

The Capuchin Soup Kitchen also offers Jefferson House,  a twelve-bed, residential treatment facility for indigent males seeking to reclaim their lives from addictions. Residents normally complete their stay in six to nine months.  During that time they learn to practice honesty, courage and other virtues essential to recovery and to the development of a sober, healthy and happy life. They participate in twelve-step recovery meetings, and are encouraged to continue such participation following their departure from Jefferson House. The program also provides opportunity to work at other Capuchin Soup Kitchen locations, for which the men are paid a modest stipend. New residents to Jefferson House are admitted via referral from inpatient substance abuse treatment programs. Jefferson House is accredited by CARF International and is one of the top 3% of therapeutic communities who received no recommendations from CARF. Call for an admission interview. Admissions on a bed-available basis. Jefferson House, (313) 331-8900

The Capuchin Soup Kitchen's On the Rise Bakery is run by men who desire to truly change their lives.  The bakers have recently been released from prison or have completed a substance abuse treatment program.  To learn more, call  (313) 922-8510

Clothing
The Capuchin Services Center distributes men's, women's children clothing for anyone in need. There is no geographic eligibility criteria; however, all recipients of service are interviewed by a Guest Services Specialist.  Identification must be provided for all individuals for whom assistance is requested. The clothing distribution area has a retail feel with racks are arranged in a consumer-friendly manner.

Shower Program
The shower program is located at the Capuchin Soup Kitchen's Meldrum kitchen site, 1264 Meldrum. There are a limited number of showers Monday through Friday.  Limit: one shower per week unless extenuating circumstances. We try to provide a clean set of clothing but that is not always available. Sign up during the meal hours: 8:30 - 9:30 a.m. Breakfast; 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Lunch.

Rosa Parks Children's and Youth Program
After-school tutoring and art therapy sessions are available for children ages 6-14 at our Rosa Parks Children's & Youth program located at our Conner kitchen site, 4390 Conner, 4:00pm - 6pm Monday - Friday. Capuchin Soup Kitchen

Capuchin Soup Kitchen - Detroit, Michigan

Since its inception, the Capuchin Soup Kitchen has depended on the time and efforts of others in the community who shared our concern and commitment to the people in need. At the heart of our mission is the service of the many volunteers that donate their time on a weekly or monthly basis. Volunteers provide the extra pair of hands, the warm smile and caring attitude that make the Capuchin Soup Kitchen what it is. The hours of service given by volunteers translates into over 30 additional full time staff that would have to be employed to serve those who come to our door.

To volunteer at a Capuchin Soup Kitchen program, we ask you to have a willingness to work hard, an open & positive attitude, and a smile. In joyfully serving others in need, you will learn a great deal about yourself and the Capuchin Soup Kitchen guests.

Capuchin Soup Kitchen

Capuchin Soup Kitchen - Detroit, Michigan

We are a religious community of friars inspired by St Francis of Assisi. As Franciscans, we live and work with those who are in need of help … the poor, the disenfranchised, the needy. We serve God through the work we do...in the communities we serve.

St. Francis of Assisi created a community of equality whose mission was to proclaim that the Good News is available to all people, especially those shunned by society.  Nearly 800 years later, the Capuchins continue to build on this Franciscan tradition through prayer, contemplation, preaching, and caring for the needy.  Today we preach, teach, cook, and counsel.  We minister in hospitals, schools, soup kitchens, parishes, and in the mission fields.  We are pastors, artists, missionaries, farmers, mechanics, and writers.

The Capuchin Franciscan Province of St. Joseph began its Detroit ministry on Mt. Elliott Street in 1883 and developed a religious mission to live and work among the poor. The friars were part of the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin, a worldwide men's Catholic religious order based in Rome. The Capuchins are spiritual advisers and confessors who made their home in Detroit on the east side in a newly-platted former farmland known as Russell's Grove and today known as Islandview. It was common to see the friars traveling on foot, via horse and buggy or even occasionally on the new electric streetcars and interurban trains. The friars and partners in ministry would reach out to parishioners as far away as Roseville - a trip that was then a whole day's journey.

Within a few years, the Capuchins built the stately St. Bonaventure Monastery on Mt. Elliott - purposely locating in a neighborhood where street people were known to congregate. Soon word spread that the Capuchins would help those in need, providing spiritual counseling as well as a sandwich. In 1924, Solanus Casey, a simple man - a simple priest - arrived at the monastery and forever expanded its focus.

The Soup Kitchen got its official start during the Great Depression of 1929, a period of devastating national poverty that caused the poor of this Detroit community to knock on the monastery's back door asking for bread. "They are hungry; get them some soup and sandwiches," Fr. Solanus was known to say to the friars. In time the lines grew to more than 2,000 people waiting for their single meal of the day. The friars knew they had to do more.

In response to the time's overwhelming social needs, the friars turned to the men and women of the Secular Franciscans and joined together with them to collect food from farms, make soup, bake bread and serve meals in the hall next to the monastery. From these beginnings grew the Capuchin Soup Kitchen of today.

Ray McDonough (L) and Br. Bernard Burke, OFM Cap. (R)Collaboration has its roots in the very beginnings of the Capuchin Soup Kitchen. So much so that the question of who “founded” the Soup Kitchen is complicated. Recently, Br. Nick answered a call from a great-niece of the late Fr. Herman Buss. She referred to Fr. Herman as the “Founder of the Soup Kitchen”. Later that week I received a letter from the granddaughter of Mr. Ray McDonough. She called her grandfather a “Founder of the Soup Kitchen” and expressed disappointment at the lack of acknowledgement on our webpage.

Who is the Founder? Most would say Bl. Solanus. Yet, Br. Francis Spruck worked with Bl. Solanus passing out sandwiches to men who came to the Monastery door. When the number of men seeking food from the friars overwhelmed them, they went to Fr. Ulrich Danner, the Guardian of the Monastery and asked for help. Fr. Ulrich asked Fr. Herman Buss to do something. Fr. Herman and lay members of the Third Order of St. Francis then organized Soup Kitchen.

What about Ray McDonough? From the beginning he would be instrumental in the Soup Kitchen’s operation. Ray begged and gathered donations. He organized the work of the kitchen and would keep at it for thirty years.

So, who is the Founder of the Capuchin Soup Kitchen? Bl. Solanus, Br. Francis, Fr. Ulrich, Fr. Herman, the leaders of the Third Order or Ray McDonough? They all contributed to our founding. Their vision and spirit have endured. Today, the friars, staff, donors and volunteers continue to serve those who come to our door.
