Capuchin Soup Kitchen - Detroit, Michigan

We always knew Capuchin friar Br. Bob was a hero and now he's been officially named one of the Everyday Heroes: 50 Americans Changing The World One NonProfit at a Time.

To order your book, call 313.579.2100, ext. 153

Everyday Heroes is a look inside the world of social entrepreneurs giving us an exquisitely photographed sacred bundle of stories. In this remarkable tribute to the ordinary heroes among us, Everyday Heroes: 50 Americans Changing The World One Nonprofit at a Time, celebrates those who have risen to leadership roles in nonprofit organizations across the country, representing a diverse range of causes and demographics and affecting hundreds of thousands of lives. There has never been a book like it. Not remotely.

“There are 90 million people under the age of twenty-five in this country who have been raised with a value system that includes doing service. They’re itching for a way to do good. Everyone will tell you that you have to choose between making money and doing good. You don’t.” –Robert Egger, Founder and President, D.C. Central Kitchen and one of the heroes.

“It is precisely their ordinariness that makes them extraordinary. Unlike our idols of the past these new revolutionaries are not wrangling to become the dominant voice of reform. Their power stems from the aggregate. Together they are raising a chorus for change. Listen closely, and you’ll hear a growing battle cry: If we don’t take care of each other, who will?” –from the introduction by Katrina Fried

KATRINA FRIED, is the author of American Farmer, and editor of several award winning books: The Oxford Project, Gay in America, The Last Good War, Slow: Life in a Tuscan Town, Cooking with Italian Grandmothers, Primal Cuts, and On The Street. Creating unique visual narratives that push the boundaries and traditional limitations
of illustrated books is her passion. She lives and works in New York City and Northern California.

PAUL MOBLEY, creator and photographer of award-winning American Farmer: Portraits from the Heartland, trained with Annie Leibovitz and has successfully worked with a broad range

of corporate, advertising, and editorial clients, including American Express, Sony, Citigroup, Ford, Compaq, Gourmet, Max Factor, Microsoft, and many others. He lives in Michigan and New York.

Planned Gifts

  • Charitable Bequest in a Will or Trust
  • A charitable bequest stipulates that a specific amount (a percentage or the remainder of your estate) be given to Capuchin Soup Kitchen after your lifetime. Gifts from your estate to CSK are exempt from estate tax.
  • Life Insurance
    • Life insurance in the form of an old policy no longer needed by the original beneficiary or a newly created policy to benefit CSK can be a helpful investment in the organization. Small premiums now may generate a major gift in the future, and premiums for these policies often are tax deductible. Many employers provide group life insurance as a benefit, and CSK may be named for a portion of proceeds.
  • Charitable Gift Annuities
  • Real Estate Gifts
    • Real estate gifts may include developed property, undeveloped property or gifts subject to a prior life interest. Prior to acceptance of real estate, CSK will require an environmental review of the property to ensure that the property has no environmental issues that may subject CSK to legal and financial liability.

Capuchin Soup Kitchen

Capuchin Soup Kitchen - Detroit, Michigan

Helping families recover from the tragedy of a fire or establishing a new life out of a shelter is part of the ongoing Capuchin mission. In order to assist these families, we willing accept good usable furniture at the Capuchin Services Center. Donated household items such as bed and bath linens, dishes, pots and pans, silverware, and small appliances all help displaced families reestablish their households. Working appliances; gas stoves and dryers, refrigerators (no more than 12 years old) and washing machines are also very much in demand.

We are constantly in need of clean, quality clothing for distribution.  Men and children's clothing are always in greatest demand. All of these items can be dropped off at the Capuchin Services Center.

Providing emergency food to those in need is at the core of out Capuchin Mission. Non-perishable food items are always gladly accepted to be distributed to the 200 families that daily come to the Services Center.

During the Thanksgiving season, special programs provide Thanksgiving food baskets to families. At Christmas time, toys and food baskets are distributed to families in need. Turkeys and holiday hams along with new, non-violent toys can be donated for these programs.

The Capuchin Soup Kitchen also accepts the donation of operational cars, boats, motor homes and recreational vehicles. CSK partners with the Volunteers of America who assist in picking up your donation. Contact Lee at 313.579.2100 extension 201. The proceeds from the sale of the donated vehicle benefit the poor and underserved.

Capuchin Soup Kitchen

Capuchin Soup Kitchen - Detroit, Michigan

Men and women, young and more mature, give their time and talents to support the work of the Capuchin Soup Kitchen

Since its inception, the Capuchin Soup Kitchen has depended on the time and efforts of others in the community who shared our concern and commitment to the poor. At the heart of our mission is the service of the many volunteers that donate their time on a daily, weekly or monthly basis. Whether preparing food in the kitchen, serving meals to guests; planting, weeding or harvesting in the Earthworks garden; hanging clothing, building pantry boxes or packaging meat in the Services Center; tutoring or mentoring a child or assisting in the Arts program at the Children's Library, volunteers provide the extra pair of hands, the warm smile and caring attitude that make the Capuchin Soup Kitchen what it is. The hours of service given by volunteers translates into over 30 additional full time staff that would have to be employed to serve those who come to our door. The generous gift of time given to the Capuchin Soup Kitchen by volunteers insures that we are able to return eighty-nine cents of every donated dollar to direct client services.

If you want to volunteer at the Capuchin Soup Kitchen we ask you to bring three important things with you: a willingness to work hard, an open and positive attitude, and a smile. We can promise you that you will work hard, have some fun, and learn a great deal about yourself and your fellow human beings.

Many volunteer opportunities exist at the Capuchin Soup Kitchen. Some of our most popular jobs include:

  • Serving meals and assisting in the kitchens
  • Sorting and sizing clothing
  • Preparing emergency food packages
  • Working in the Earthworks Garden
  • Tutoring, teaching and mentoring children and teens
  • Summer Camps for Kids
  • Thanksgiving Basket Give away
  • Christmas Coat Program
  • Assisting at our special events held throughout the year

Capuchin Soup Kitchen

Capuchin Soup Kitchen - Detroit, Michigan

We are a religious community of friars inspired by St Francis of Assisi. As Franciscans, we live and work with those who are in need of help … the poor, the disenfranchised, the needy. We serve God through the work we do...in the communities we serve.

Francis of Assisi created a community of equality whose mission was to proclaim that the Good News is available to all people, especially those shunned by society.  Nearly 800 years later, the Capuchins continue to build on this Franciscan tradition through prayer, contemplation, preaching, and caring for the needy.  Today we preach, teach, cook, and counsel.  We minister in hospitals, schools, soup kitchens, parishes, and in the mission fields.  We are pastors, artists, missionaries, farmers, mechanics, and writers.

All people are meant to enjoy the gifts of God's creation. This is the foundation of Capuchin-Franciscan life. The friars of the Capuchin Province of St. Joseph serve in a variety of ministries including social service, schools, chaplaincy, retreat houses and parishes in Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Montana, Arizona, California, Nicaragua, and Panama. We have served in Detroit for over 125 years.

Capuchin Soup Kitchen

Capuchin Soup Kitchen - Detroit, Michigan

The Capuchin Province of St. Joseph began its Detroit ministry on Mt. Elliott Street in 1883 and developed a religious mission to live and work among the poor. The friars were offshoots of the Capuchin Order in Switzerland, spiritual advisers and confessors who found a home in the area of Detroit once known as Russell's Grove. It was common to see the friars traveling via horse and buggy. They would reach out to parishioners as far away as Roseville - a trip that was then a whole day's journey.

Smith, J

Within a few years, the Capuchins built the stately St. Bonaventure Monastery on Mt. Elliott - purposely locating in a neighborhood where street people were known to congregate. Soon word spread that the Capuchins would help those in need, providing spiritual counseling as well as a sandwich. In 1924, Solanus Casey, a simple man - a simple priest - arrived at the monastery and forever expanded its focus.

The Soup Kitchen got its official start during the Great Depression of 1929, a period of devastating national poverty that caused the poor of this Detroit community to knock on the monastery's back door asking for bread. "They are hungry; get them some soup and sandwiches," Fr. Solanus was known to say to the friars. In time the lines grew to more than 2,000 people waiting for their single meal of the day. The friars knew they had to do more.

In response to the time's overwhelming social needs, the friars turned to the men and women of the Secular Franciscans and joined together with them to collect food from farms, make soup, bake bread and serve meals in the hall next to the monastery. From these beginnings grew the Capuchin Soup Kitchen of today.
