Recovery

We host what is officially known as a 12 step study each morning at alternating kitchen sites. Residents normally complete their stay in six to nine months.  During that time they learn to practice honesty, courage and other virtues essential to recovery and to the development of a sober, healthy and happy life. They participate in twelve-step recovery meetings, and are encouraged to continue such participation following their departure from Jefferson House. The program also provides opportunity to work at other Capuchin Soup Kitchen locations, for which the men are paid a modest stipend. New residents to Jefferson House are admitted via referral from inpatient substance abuse treatment programs. Jefferson House is accredited by CARF International and is one of the top 3% of therapeutic communities who received no recommendations from CARF. Call for an admission interview. Capuchin Soup Kitchen

Capuchin Soup Kitchen - Detroit, Michigan

Inspired by the life and spirit of St. Francis of Assisi, we:

  • tend to people's basic needs, especially the need for food,
  • strive to stimulate minds and nourish spirits, and
  • work to understand and address root causes of social injustice in our community.

In all we do, we seek to build alliances with others who share a commitment to this vision.

Capuchin Soup Kitchen

Capuchin Soup Kitchen - Detroit, Michigan

In your lifetime, you have most likely been generous to many causes. They may have been charities that have made a difference in your life or the lives of those that you care about, or perhaps, their mission is one that you believe in and want to help support. For more information on how to include the Capuchin Soup Kitchen in your estate plans, contact Kristi Hassouna at 313.579.2100 ext.185 or email khassouna@thecapuchins.org.

The Capuchin Soup Kitchen is honored to accept a wide variety of Planned Gifts, in order to best meet the needs of our donors.

Charitable Bequest in a Will or Trust

A charitable bequest stipulates that a specific amount (a percentage or the remainder of your estate) be given to Capuchin Soup Kitchen after your lifetime. Gifts from your estate to CSK are exempt from estate tax.

Life Insurance

Life insurance in the form of an old policy no longer needed by the original beneficiary or a newly created policy to benefit CSK can be a helpful investment in our future.  Small premiums now may generate a major gift in the future, and premiums for these policies often are tax deductible. Many employers provide group life insurance as a benefit, and CSK may be named as a beneficiary for a portion of proceeds.

Charitable Gift Annuities

A Charitable Gift Annuity is an agreement between you and the Capuchin Soup Kitchen wherein we agree to provide you a determined amount for life, in exchange for your gift. Unlike most other retained income arrangements, a gift annuity is not a trust - it is a contract. Charitable Gift Annuities pay you a fixed percentage return of your gift based on the donation amount and your age.

Real Estate Gifts

Real estate gifts may include developed property, undeveloped property or gifts subject to a prior life interest. Prior to acceptance of real estate, CSK will require an environmental review of the property to ensure that the property has no environmental issues that may subject CSK to legal and financial liability.

Retirement Assets (401k, IRA)

Retirement assets can be easily gifted to the Capuchin Soup Kitchen by changing the beneficiary designation. You can also reduce income taxes payable by your family - in addition to saving estate taxes - by giving retirement assets to the Capuchin Soup Kitchen. Please consult with your tax advisor, as special rules apply to making charitable gifts of these assets during life.

If you have a question, please do not hesitate to contact

Capuchin Soup Kitchen

Capuchin Soup Kitchen - Detroit, Michigan

Years ago, the Capuchin Soup Kitchen transitioned from encouraging donations of Christmas toys to a Caps, Coats N’ Kids program for children under the age of ten. Each child receives a new winter coat, warm hat, and gloves/mittens, “shopped” carefully by the child’s parent. This Christmas, we will be distributing over 4,000 such items. Can you help?

Please drop off new apparel to the Capuchin Services Center, 6333 Medbury St., Detroit, MI 48211 by December 19th. The Capuchin Services Center is open from Monday - Friday 8:30 AM - 4:00 PM or Saturday 8:00 AM – 1:00 PM and is conveniently located near I-94 and Mount Elliott.

We are especially in need of coats sized 10 through 18. Thank you for helping keep our kids warm this Christmas season!

Capuchin Soup Kitchen

Capuchin Soup Kitchen - Detroit, Michigan

Men and women, young and more mature, give their time and talents to support the work of the Capuchin Soup Kitchen

Since its inception, the Capuchin Soup Kitchen has depended on the time and efforts of others in the community who shared our concern and commitment to the poor. At the heart of our mission is the service of the many volunteers that donate their time on a daily, weekly or monthly basis. Whether preparing food in the kitchen, serving meals to guests; planting, weeding or harvesting in the Earthworks garden; hanging clothing, building pantry boxes or packaging meat in the Services Center; tutoring or mentoring a child or assisting in the Arts program at the Children's Library, volunteers provide the extra pair of hands, the warm smile and caring attitude that make the Capuchin Soup Kitchen what it is. The hours of service given by volunteers translates into over 30 additional full time staff that would have to be employed to serve those who come to our door. The generous gift of time given to the Capuchin Soup Kitchen by volunteers insures that we are able to return eighty-nine cents of every donated dollar to direct client services.

If you want to volunteer at the Capuchin Soup Kitchen we ask you to bring three important things with you: a willingness to work hard, an open and positive attitude, and a smile. We can promise you that you will work hard, have some fun, and learn a great deal about yourself and your fellow human beings.

Many volunteer opportunities exist at the Capuchin Soup Kitchen. Some of our most popular jobs include:

  • Serving meals and assisting in the kitchens
  • Sorting and sizing clothing
  • Preparing emergency food packages
  • Working in the Earthworks Garden
  • Tutoring, teaching and mentoring children and teens
  • Summer Camps for Kids
  • Thanksgiving Basket Give away
  • Christmas Coat Program
  • Assisting at our special events held throughout the year

Capuchin Soup Kitchen

Capuchin Soup Kitchen - Detroit, Michigan

We are a religious community of friars inspired by St Francis of Assisi. As Franciscans, we live and work with those who are in need of help … the poor, the disenfranchised, the needy. We serve God through the work we do...in the communities we serve.

Francis of Assisi created a community of equality whose mission was to proclaim that the Good News is available to all people, especially those shunned by society.  Nearly 800 years later, the Capuchins continue to build on this Franciscan tradition through prayer, contemplation, preaching, and caring for the needy.  Today we preach, teach, cook, and counsel.  We minister in hospitals, schools, soup kitchens, parishes, and in the mission fields.  We are pastors, artists, missionaries, farmers, mechanics, and writers.

All people are meant to enjoy the gifts of God's creation. This is the foundation of Capuchin-Franciscan life. The friars of the Capuchin Province of St. Joseph serve in a variety of ministries including social service, schools, chaplaincy, retreat houses and parishes in Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Montana, Arizona, California, Nicaragua, and Panama. We have served in Detroit for over 125 years.

The Capuchin Province of St. Joseph began its Detroit ministry on Mt. Elliott Street in 1883 and developed a religious mission to live and work among the poor. The friars were offshoots of the Capuchin Order in Switzerland, spiritual advisers and confessors who found a home in the area of Detroit once known as Russell's Grove. It was common to see the friars traveling via horse and buggy. They would reach out to parishioners as far away as Roseville - a trip that was then a whole day's journey.

Within a few years, the Capuchins built the stately St. Bonaventure Monastery on Mt. Elliott - purposely locating in a neighborhood where street people were known to congregate. Soon word spread that the Capuchins would help those in need, providing spiritual counseling as well as a sandwich. In 1924, Solanus Casey, a simple man - a simple priest - arrived at the monastery and forever expanded its focus.

The Soup Kitchen got its official start during the Great Depression of 1929, a period of devastating national poverty that caused the poor of this Detroit community to knock on the monastery's back door asking for bread. "They are hungry; get them some soup and sandwiches," Fr. Solanus was known to say to the friars. In time the lines grew to more than 2,000 people waiting for their single meal of the day. The friars knew they had to do more.

In response to the time's overwhelming social needs, the friars turned to the men and women of the Secular Franciscans and joined together with them to collect food from farms, make soup, bake bread and serve meals in the hall next to the monastery. From these beginnings grew the Capuchin Soup Kitchen of today.
